Transferring your skills

Many jobs have similar competencies and tasks. The set of skills to deliver these can often be transferable across occupations and industries.

What does this mean for you? Skills you may have gained in past jobs, volunteer work or formal training could be transferred to jobs with a similar set of skills. This can be helpful if you’re looking to switch up your career path or explore new opportunities if you’re facing retrenchment or in an industry that may be declining as our economy changes.

Identifying your transferrable skills could broaden your job opportunities and ability to shift careers if you’re looking to shake things up.

Recognising your skills

Did you know that you may be able to have your prior learning recognised and counted towards future studies?

Through vocational education and training (VET), you can have past experience and training assessed through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Through this you can:

  • Have competencies counted towards relevant part or full qualifications
  • Fast track your studies and reduce time spent training
  • Only train in areas that you need to build your skills in

If you’re looking to have your prior learning recognised towards a qualification, chat with your training organisation for more information and to undertake an assessment.
