Though hiring begins to ramp up heading into December, casual jobs picked up by savvy workers around this time can be a fast-track to a permanent job in the new year.

Career coach and founder of The Careers Academy Jane Jackson says consideration for permanent positions will not arise until the end of January, but that casual jobs offer the easiest path to finding consistent work.

She says jobseekers often dismiss Christmas employment due to the perceived temporary nature of the positions, but argues these jobs often turn into ongoing work.

“You can turn your Christmas role into a permanent, full-time role if you play your cards right.”

Recruiters prefer to look in-house and hire known applicants, meaning that those who have worked for a company in a casual position are more likely to win a future permanent role.

Causal workers also have access to internal job boards, where they can view vacancies that may not be otherwise advertised and can easily contact hiring managers within other departments.

Jackson says the key to securing permanent work from a casual role is to put in as much effort as possible.

“Treat it as a permanent job and go above and beyond by volunteering to take on additional responsibilities.

“If there’s an area of expertise that you can help with, offer to do so – that way you get on the radar of…[hiring managers within other departments] too.”
