This week Davo, Tom and Callum chatted to recent TAFE SA graduate Tuani and TAFE SA lecturer Melissa about their Individual Support – Aged Care Course.

TAFE SA graduate Tuani Corteletti has embraced change to achieve her goal of a career in nursing. Tuani has moved from Brazil to Australia, learned a new language and studied two qualifications on her pathway to a full-time nursing role.

“I studied business at university in Brazil and I was working in a bank, but I wanted to do nursing in Australia,” she says.

“When I arrived in Adelaide, I didn’t have experience in health care and my English wasn’t good. I thought Individual Client Support would be a good start so I could get to know the care environment and how to help people.”

To kickstart her career, Tuani studied a Certificate III in individual Client Support (Aged Care) at TAFE SA. Here, she developed her knowledge and gained practical skills required to be a support worker for older people. In this role she helped people with daily activities and personal care, she says that this experience not only provided valuable care experience but helped with her English skills as she interacted with clients each day.

While working, she also started studying the Diploma of Nursing at TAFE SA where she enjoyed learning “something new” and building on her health care knowledge. She says the course also helped her to develop good communication and time management skills which she says are essential for nurses.

“After studying the aged care course and working for a while, I felt I was ready to study nursing. The diploma has been challenging and quite different for me, but it’s been a good experience,” says Tuani, who is now a nurse at one of Adelaide’s major hospitals.

“I wanted to do something people-oriented and nursing is about people and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy the health care industry, it’s very rewarding.”
